1977
- January 1977: The birth of gay square dancing! Men in Miami, FL started dancing in bars (Double R, Uncle Charlie's) to recorded music with calls.
1980
- February 3: Miami Mustangs (later, renamed South Florida Mustangs) formally organized for the purpose of reinstituting and perpetuating "the unique art form of Arky* (of the same sex) Square Dancing." All members must be male. (Source: Ten Years IAGSDC)
- November: Skip Barrett held square dance classes at Dreamland in San Francisco, CA.
1981
- August ??: Capital City Squares started in Sacramento, CA.
- September ??: Foggy City Squares started in San Francisco, CA.
- ????: Mile High Squares started in Denver, CO.
1982
- March 5: Five dancers run Western Star Dancers' first drop-in square-dance evening in the second-floor rehearsal space above American Conservatory Theatre on Geary Street in San Francisco, CA.
- May 10: First Western Star Dancers Basic/Mainstream class held, in the 2nd floor lobby of San Francisco's Civic Center YMCA.
- July 30 - August 1: Reno Gay Rodeo held, at which the concept of a national gay dance organization (including square dancing, clogging, and other forms of C&W dance) is discussed. (Program viewable at http://gayrodeohistory.org/1982/ProgramReno.htm)
- Oct. 13: Puddletown Squares started in Seattle, WA.
- November 12-14: Charlie's (Country & Western Bar) in Denver, CO hosted the "First National Gay Square Dance Exhibition" with caller Dave "Happy" New Year. Seven gay clubs throughout the country were invited to attend a weekend of square dancing and workshops. Only five out-of-town dancers showed up, all from San Francisco (Alan Hall, Paul Zimmermann, Jack Kendrick, Russ King, and Scott Carey). This constituted the first "fly-in" although that terminology had not yet come into play.

- ????: Midnight Squares started in San Francisco, CA.
- ????: New Year's Resolutions started in Palm Springs, CA and then in Orange County, CA and Long Beach, CA.
1983
- February 12-20: South Florida Mustangs hosted a week of square dancing and touring the local area. (The first Gay Square Dancing fly-in!) Clubs represented by visiting dancers included Puddletown Squares from Seattle, WA, Mile High Squares from Denver, CO, Western Star Dancers from San Francisco, CA, and guests from Islip, NY and Prospect, CT.
- February 14: Representatives from each club met and organized the National Gay/Lesbian Square Dance Association, later in the year renamed National Association of Gay Square Dance Clubs (NAGSDC), with a goal to encourage new non-profit gay square dance clubs across the country. Although not in attendance that weekend, New Year's Resolutions had participated in discussions about forming such an Association and is therefore considered a founding member along with the other four clubs.
- February: Rosetown Ramblers started in Portland, OR.
- March 9: First appearance of Fistful of Crinoline at a Puddletown Squares dance in Seattle, WA.
- March 20: Wilde Bunch started in Albuquerque, NM.
- May 1: Art Smith awarded the first Golden Boot Award for his outstanding contribution to gay square dancing by having started the first gay square dance club in Seattle and the gay square dance movement in the Northwest.
- June 4: Mile High Squares square danced at the 1st Annual Rocky Mountain Regional Rodeo as part of the Colorado Gay Rodeo Association.
- August: Desert Valley Squares started in Phoenix, AZ.
- August, Western Star Dancers hit 100 members.
- September 10: First monthly communication from Harlan Kerr, first chairman of the NAGSDC, outlining the proposed bylaws.
- November: Harlan Kerr sent a letter to clubs all over the country asking them to join the NAGSDC.
- November: Squares Across the Border started in Vancouver, BC.
- ???: Harlan Kerr sent out a letter to the NAGSDC asking to extend membership to the following clubs: (Source: Ten Years IAGSDC)
