Popstar Patter Tip

Popstar Patter is a popular affinity/specialty tip due to the use of current pop music. This session is usually more lively and high energy as the songs range from 124 to 130 beats per minute. Songs from artists like Lady Gaga, Psy, Taylor Swift, BTS, and others have been featured during these tips. Typically, pop songs are used but music from other sources like video games (Angry Birds) and kid songs (Baby Shark) have also been used. The songs played during the patter portion of a tip may have been released from a year ago to even as recently as a month before the dance. The songs used during the singing calls are usually not as recent due to the square dance record labels not having too many songs that are current and pop songs.

Although there are other callers who use pop songs, Darren Gallina is the caller who started the Popstar Patter. It started when his partner, Thom Dang, would suggest more modern songs for Darren to call to. This led to Darren using more of these songs at his dances and led to the debut of the Popstar Patter specialty tip at the 2011 IAGSDC “Gone With the Windmill” convention in Atlanta, GA. And it’s been a popular session at subsequent IAGSDC conventions and fly-ins. In 2013, the session was aimed at the "Under 30/Young at Heart" crowd.
