Remembrances

Jeff was taken to Mercy Hospital by ambulance on May 11, 2021, where he passed away from cardiac arrest. He apparently called the ambulance himself. The hospital had no family info, so did not know who to contact. Friends had tracked him down to the hospital but staff would only say ‘he was no longer there’. It was only when his father reached out to the hospital, around May 21, that the full details became known.

Jeff's friend, Jim Gatteau, drove to his house and found his car there. Spoke with neighbors who told them about the ambulance. They called hospitals to find out where he was taken. Mercy Hospital, Sacramento, only said Jeff wasn't there, so friends assumed he was discharged and missing. They filed a missing person report. His father went to the hospital for more info and they told him that Jeff had passed away. [2]

It is very sad news. Jeff was a full spirit always there with a smile. He always made people around him feel better.

I will truly miss Jeff.

Now a little history.

I have probably known Jeff longer that most. We go back, I believe, to 1986 while he was still in Sacramento. Jeff and I met through our roommates. His roommate was dating my roommate.

Our friendship grew closer as we would run into each other at the bars around Sacramento in the years to come.

I have some friends/neighbors from the country who Jeff was in infatuated with. He had nicknamed Bo and Luke from the Dukes of Hazard.

That nickname has stuck with them since the first night he met them.

When Jeff moved to San Francisco we lost contact with each other, however that night at Capital City Squares our paths crossed again I saw that same personality I knew.

He was the same Jeff I had met years prior.

The first question out of his mouth when he saw me was not "Hey Dennis how have you been," it was "How are Bo and Luke?"

I never let him live that one down. And man we had a lot of laughs over it.

Although Jeff and I were never close friends, more like running mates around town, I will truly miss him.

Jeff, at present I don’t have a smile on my face. We have lost you and your infectious personality and that is so sad, but believe me after I get over the shock and sadness of your loosing you I will once again get a smile on my face when I think and/or talk about you.

Thank you Jeff for coming into my life,
Dennis James[3]

From Leif Jones:

Jeffrey (Jeff) Brian Stiarwalt passed away on May 11th, 2021 due to a heart attack. He had contacted Emergency Services and was taken to a Downtown Sacramento hospital, unawares to friends and family, where he lived his final moments. For two weeks after his untimely death, a dear friend had searched through available Emergency Services in the local area of Sacramento, and with the assistance of family was able to track down where Jeff's body remained in the morgue of the hospital.

Being reunited with family, a Celebration of Life was held in his honor in Sacramento where many who knew him, between his many volunteering positions and clubs and groups, came to remember him.

To assure all those that knew Jeff, despite his death being so sudden, and his passing isolated, his friend offered this message: "There wasn't one day, not even one day, in Jeff's life that he did not know love. He was loved every single day of his life. He did everything he ever wanted to do, and he did it in his own way. He left no bucket lists or regrets behind him."
