Obituary
Ernie Lee
Ernie Lee of Chicago, Illinois died in his home on Monday, August 16, 1993 of complications associated with AIDS. He was 35.
Born January 6, 1958 in Flint, Michigan as Ernie Lee Hosler, Mr. Lee legally changed his name in 1978. Lee grew up in the Flint and Detroit area. In 1989 Lee moved to Chicago. In Chicago he worked in the garment business as an assembler. In Detroit before moving he had worked for the PDQ Courier Service and part-time as a bartender at the Hayloft Saloon and at the Crystal Peacock, both westside Detroit gay bars.
While in Detroit Lee was a member of the Detroit Together Men's Chorus, and in recent years he had become active in the the Chicago ACT-UP Chapter. Sewing, music and doing things for others were the activities that pleased him most.
He was preceded in death (1989) by his lover of many years Jerry Palmer and in 1992 by his very good friend Alberto Dominici. Survivors include his current companion Gregg, his father, one brother, one sister, a grandmother with whom he was very close, his roommate Gary, and many friends in Chicago and Detroit. As he wished no services were conducted and his cremated remains were given to his grandmother.[1]
Remembrances
On August 16th, Ernie Lee passed away after a strongly fought battle with AIDS. Ernie was always one of those people who had a kind word for everyone, and a cutting wit that kept everyone in high spirits.
One image that comes to mind is of Campy Dancing Weekend, which was held two years ago, where he brought enough stuff to move into the cabin for a week. The show that evening was one of laughs, and from what I remember, a good time was had by all.
Ernie's flare for fashion, when it came to dresses was only surpassed by that of well-known fashion designers, and this was reflected in his many She-Devil outfits.
He will be missed by those who knew him, as well as myself.
Good luck Ernie, we'll all miss you.
