Allan Hurst: This is Mom eating a hot dog, taken at the Chicago Costco. She had never been to a Costco before, and this started a several year tradition of my renting a car (via Zipcar) to drive her to Costco to pick up such essentials as bags of crumbled bacon boxes of chocolate, and Zion National kosher hot dogs, among other delicacies. All of Mom's girlfriends were jealous because THEIR sons didn't take THEM to Costco for $1.50 jumbo kosher hot dogs. (Several of their children were quite irate with me for "upping the ante" on them.)

Background

Sally Hurst was Allan Hurst’s mother, and Randy Hensley’s mother-in-law.

After her husband Bill died in 2001, she lived alone in Chicago until 2010.

Allan was visiting her when 9/11 occurred, and he was stuck in Chicago for several weeks. That night (9/11/2001) was a Chi-Town Squares introduction to square dancing. Tired of watching the news on TV, Allan took Sally to Chi-Town’s intro night, where she became part of the new Basic/Mainstream/Plus class, and danced with the club for several years.

She began developing dementia a few years later, and stopped dancing with the club, though she continued to support the club by renewing her membership faithfully, and sending treats such as her famous beef brisket to Chi-Town potlucks and dances.
