Remembrances

Our fondest memories of Rudy help fill our emptiness as we say good-bye. Rudy Gomez, a close friend to so many, a loved one to a fortunate few, and an amigo to all, left us on September 4. His courageous battle with AIDS ended at home in the company of those who cherished him and loved him.

Born in Corpus Christi, Texas on February 13, 1959, Rudy grew up in the Hispanic culture in Texas. His charm, his humor, his kindness and his sensitivity were shared in Texas-sized proportions. His growing-up years were spent between Corpus Christi and Laredo. After a four year tour of duty in the Pacific Rim with the U.S. Navy, Rudy settled in Seattle and called this his home for the past 13 years. He ended his career with AETNA Insurance and spent this past year nurturing friendships and enjoying the companionship of his dog, Boomer.

Rudy is survived by his companion, Gary, and long-time friend and steadfast care-giver, Dale. Sharing in his loss are his sister and brother-in-law, Norma and Carlos Rodriguez, his niece, Marcia, and nephew Carlos Jr., and members of his family and extended family living in Texas. Rudy is preceded in death by his mother.

When the Puddle Town Squares first squared up, Rudy was there. He was also an early member of the Cascade Cloggers. As a member of these two groups, he did exhibition dancing at square dancing conventions and local events within and outside of the gay community. During his illness Rudy often said that dancing is what he missed the most.

At Rudy's request there will be no local service. A funeral mass has been arranged for October 16 in Laredo. He will rest with his mother, finally achieving a peace so well deserved.

Our deepest gratitude goes to those who have provided a network of support for Rudy, his family and friends. Special thanks to the caring staff at Virginia Mason. Please feel free to make a donation to your favorite AIDS charity in Rudy's name and embrace an opportunity to square up at least once for Rudy.

Adios, estimado amigo. Vamos a echar de menos a ti.
