Obituary
Mark O'Brien of Sharon, formerly of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for over 40 years, passed away suddenly at UPMC Passavant Hospital in Pittsburgh on Thursday, April 18, 2024
Mark was born in Sharon Jan. 3, 1952, to Hubert J. and Mary Roper O'Brien, the fourth of nine children and the first son
Mark was a 1970 graduate of Kennedy Christian High School
Following graduation, he attended college at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and earned his nursing degree from Youngstown State University in 1975.
While in the Shenango Valley, he worked as a registered nurse in the Orthopedic Department at the Greenville Hospital in Greenville.
After moving to Florida, he loved taking care of elderly patients and took pride in working as an endoscopy nurse during the latter part of his career.
Mark retired from nursing after working at both Holy Cross Hospital and Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale and relocated to his hometown of Sharon.
Mark was a great chef and entertainer and loved hosting family and friends at dinners, card games, and gatherings in his Fort Lauderdale home, and later when he moved home to the Shenango Valley.
He was a world traveler and enjoyed cruises with family and friends.
He also loved square dancing, reading, walking at Buhl Park, Jeopardy, 60 Minutes, Antiques Roadshow, his siblings, his many nieces and nephews, along with his great-nieces and nephews.
Mark is survived by three sisters, Mary Alice Lamm (Fred) of Durham, N.C., Joyce Schuster (Robert) of Sharon, and Margaret Rock (Albert) of Farrell; three brothers, Michael O'Brien (Roni) of Farrell, Kevin R. O'Brien (Allison) of West Chester, Pa., and William T. O'Brien (Lauri) of Bethel, Ark.; brother-in-law, James Scharville and sister-in-law, Annette O'Brien; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews, cousins, family in Georgia, and his many friends in both Fort Lauderdale and in the Shenango Valley.
Mark was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Patricia Ann Scharville (James); his brother, Hubert J. O'Brien, Jr., (Annette); and sister-in-law, Denise O'Brien (Michael).
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Buhl Farm Park, 715 Hazen Road, Hermitage, PA 16148, or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.[1]
Remembrances
We have some sad news to report: After returning from our week away, we learned that long time Mustang dancer Mark O'Brien has passed away. Mark has been a close personal friend for well over thirty plus years. He was so well liked by everyone in the Mustang's Square Dance Club, not just for his helpful participation, but his quick wit and sense of humor. We are truly heartbroken.
