Dorothy Hawkins' spirit left this world on Friday, November 26, 2021. She grew up in Grand Rapids, MI, and her favorite escape was her parents' cottage in Grand Haven, spending many happy times on Lake Michigan. She was a fierce tennis player, winning the Michigan Junior Tennis Championship. She married Bob Hawkins during WW2 and worked for Bell Telephone in Grand Rapids, Colorado Springs, and Chicago. They eventually settled in Alton, IL and she raised two children, taught high school, and opened her own antique business, The Pine Door.
Upon retirement, she moved to Albuquerque, NM in 1987, where she became enthralled with Southwest colors, furniture, and crafts. She took woodworking classes and made Spanish Colonial furniture. In her workshop she made mirrors, boxes, menorahs, and all types of original and one-of-a-kind articles. She joined other artists in displaying their work at Yucca Gallery in Old Town.
Dorothy supported women's rights and choice all her adult life. She was instrumental in creating housing for domestic violence victims when she lived in Alton, IL. She supported Planned Parenthood. She was an animal lover and adopted many rescue dogs during her lifetime.
Dorothy had a fully lived 93 years and will be missed by her children, Matthew and Martha Hawkins, her many friends, and by Marian Gardner, her partner of many years.[2]

Remembrances

Dorothy and Marian danced with the Wilde Bunch for at least 10 years (possibly more), and were part of the 1992 Albuquerque convention team, in charge of signage.
Dorothy brought "The Chain" to the Wilde Bunch Christmas Gift exchange many years ago, and that ONE thing was required to be passed on every year after that.  I'm sure it has been going around the Bunch for nearly 30 years!  They hosted a few WB parties back in the day, too.  If I remember right, Danny was able to go to a pool party they hosted in 2002 or so at their beautiful home in Corrales, overlooking the Sandia Mountains.
Marian is still with us--I saw her brief post recently about Dorothy's death.
They were and are very special people in our memory.
