Remembrances

Tom was a man who had a deep and profound impact on the lives of all those who hew him.

He was an inquisitive and deeply introverted man most of his life. He was gifted in many ways - in music, in intelligence, and in compassion. Sometimes his humility got in the way of our appreciating some of his strengths, which were many.

To was an Eagle Scout as a young man, a Phi Beta Kappa scholar and a gifted student in mathematics, even at a young age. When he felt challenged by new professional possibilities, he made the courageous leap back into full-time graduate studies at A.S.U. His career life was varied, he began working for pennies at a neighborhood store in Wisconsin and wound up in computer science at Intel.

Although shying away from recognition, Tom willingly and patiently shared his practical wisdom with those around him, but never in a patronizing way. He affirmed other people as they were, and always protected them from discomfort. Tom was on-violent and deeply sensitive to those around him. He was a man of incredible depth and inner strength. He probably helped other to the neglect of himself at times. The lessons Tom shared with Jon, his mother and sisters, his friends and co-workers are lessons we are still absorbing. We will continue learning from Tom as long as our memories of him live - and that will be forever.

Tom is survived by his companion, Jon Sywassink; mother, Marion; and sisters, Nancy Bauman and Jane Daniels.
