Obituary

An open house to celebrate the life of John L. Larry Murchison will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at 5130 N.E. Broadway.

Mr. Murchison died Friday of complications from AIDS in a friend's home. He was 48.

Born Oct. 15, 1945, in Rocky Mount, N.C., Mr. Murchison worked as a disability examiner for the state of North Carolina in Raleigh before moving to Portland in 1980. In Oregon, he worked for the state Employment Division, where he was the lead claims adjudicator before he retired in December because of illness.

He graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1968. An Army veteran, he served from 1969 to 1971.

Mr. Murchison was a member of the Rosetown Ramblers, a Portland lesbian and gay square dance club. He was an active planner for the fourth annual International Lesbian and Gay Square Dance Convention held for more than 700 participants in Portland in July 1987.

Mr. Murchison is survived by his parents, LeRoy and Lerene, and grandfather, N.C. Barnes, all of Rocky Mount; and brother, Ken of Spring Hope, N.C.

The family suggests remembrances be contributions to Friends of PWA Foundation or Our House of Portland.

Mr. Murchison's ashes will be scattered in the Portland area and at Pamlico Beach, N.C.[1]
