Fernando Soto 1948-2024
Fernando Soto, Jr., age 75, a long-term resident of New York City and Red Hook, NY died peacefully on April 4, 2024 after a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Fernando was born on December 18, 1948 in Carlsbad, NM to Fernando and Manuela (Calderon) Soto, where he was raised and graduated from Carlsbad High School in 1967. He obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting at New Mexico State University in 1971 and a Master’s Degree in Taxation from Fordham University in New York in 1976. He was a Certified Public Accountant and began his accounting career with Arthur Andersen & Company in 1971. He was an advocate for homeless people and for 20 years he was financial officer for HELP USA and Urban Pathways, Inc., developers of transitional housing for homeless and low income individuals. He also taught accounting at Berkeley College and Manhattan College in New York City.

Fernando was an active member of several Episcopal Churches including St. Luke in the Fields in New York City and St. Paul’s and Trinity Parish in Tivoli, NY. At St. Paul’s, he served in various positions including Treasurer, Vestry member and Altar Guild.

Fernando is survived by his long-term companion, Larry Hough. In addition he is survived by his brothers, Santiago, Salvador and Saulo, sisters, Sara, Sulema, and Susan, and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents as well as a sister, Socorro, and brother, Samuel.

There will be no public viewing. Memorial Services will be held following cremation, with final interment at St. Luke in the Fields in New York City.
