Obituary

Dot Nelson-Turnier
1956-2017
Dot Nelson-Turnier, aged 60, of Houston, died on May 18, 2017 after a brief illness. Dot lived in various places in the Northeast before moving to Houston in 2003.

Trained as a financial consultant, Dot worked her way up to Vice President of International Affairs at a major financial institution in New York City.

Although same-sex marriage was not yet legal in New Jersey, she and her partner, Dian Nelson-Turnier, held a holy union ceremony in 2000, and adopted their daughter, Shemiah Nelson-Turnier, bringing her home in 2003.

Dot was a political activist, working for equal rights for LGBT people, for people with disabilities, and for fat people. She founded an organization for fat lesbians called NOLOSE, and organized a celebration of gay pride called OutHouston.

Dot is survived by her life partner, Dian Nelson-Turnier, her daughter, Shemiah Nelson-Turnier, her brother Frederick Turnier and sister Gail Newcomb, both of Texas, and many caring friends.

Donations in her name may be made to the National Center for Transgender Equality.[1]
