Obituary

Doris Eileen SMITH Passed away peacefully on February 28, 2007 after a short but courageous battle with Cancer and will be missed more than words could ever say. Above all else Doris enjoyed her family and leaves behind her 3 children, Glenn Smith, Sherry (Rory) French and Rick Smith, her 9 grand children, 6 great grand children, nieces and nephews and her brothers Ralph (Barbara) Lacey and Don (Sharon) Lacey and sisters Carol (Mike) Rinard and Karen Lacey. She was born in Avon, Idaho to Ralph C. Lacey and Effy G. Beyers on March 25, 1930 and was raised on Angle Ridge at Peck, Idaho by her father whom she idolized, and by her step-mother, Donna Lacey, whom she regarded as one of her truest companions in life. She graduated from the Orofino High School in Idaho, and enjoyed seeing people that she treasured when growing up while attending several of the class reunions. Doris lived in several places during her life. After their marriage in 1950 our Dad entered Civil Service 7 years later following the birth of 3 children. The family then moved to North Pole, Alaska, a small town 14 miles outside of Fairbanks, where we resided for 8 years. There we homesteaded for a year until a fire consumed our home that New Years Eve. The temperature had warmed to a 50 degrees from -70 degrees, so mother was able to start the car and reach some distant neighbors. She saved our lives that night! From Alaska we went to Bermuda for three and a half years and still enjoyed friends and family in Bermuda to this day. From Bermuda we went to Moses Lake, Washington for 2 years. Later, with an empty nest, Mom and my father finally moved to Spokane, Washington, where she lived and worked for 19 years spending the bulk of her working life in the food service industry and finally opening her own cafe in Airway Heights which she enjoyed running for 10 years. She loved the beauty of the Pacific Northwest and wanted to be able to enjoy the family members that resided here. In 1990, with the death of our father, Mom relocated to the Seattle area where she eventually established a fulfilling working relationship with the Horizon House Retirement Center as a cook, continuing to cook privately for several of her customers there, even after her retirement and until her illness last Fall. Always on the move, she enjoyed everything in full measure and was ready for all that life had to offer. This meant parasailing over Elliott Bay. Even though she couldn’t swim she was Full-Sail-Ahead with that great Doris Laugh. Mom was able to cruise this last May for three weeks, to Italy, Greece, France and Spain. I don’t think anyone had ever enjoyed an experience more. Doriss family residing in the Lewiston/Orofino area, are planning a celebration of her life later this Spring or Summer. Another celebration is planned in Seattle when the gardens that she loved and helped to create are in full bloom. We love and deeply miss our mom, our sister, our grandmother, and our true friend, taken from us much too soon. This is a toast for you Mom, with love and gratitude for enriching our lives so much, your example of living your life according to your convictions and values and the unconditional love that you showed to all of us. Your loving family.[1]
