David Christianson
Retired U.S. Navy Commander David Laurence Christianson, 46, died at Bethesda Naval Hospital on Monday, December 13, 1993 of complications associated with AIDS, according to his friend, Robert Levine of Silver Spring, Maryland.

Christianson had a distinguished career as an intelligence officer in the US. Navy, serving in Florida and on Seventh Fleet ships in the Mediterranean Sea, the Middle East, and Bahrain. During his 20 years of service, he was awarded the Defense Superior Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, and numerous citations and letters of commendation.

In 1972, Christianson was assigned to the Pentagon. While living in D.C., he was active in local groups, including the D.C. Lambda Squares and Lambda Soleil.

Christianson was born March 3, 1947 in South Dakota, growing up in the town of Garden City. He spent his youth helping his father on the farm and was active in church youth groups. While a Boy Scout, he became an Eagle Scout.

In 1969, he graduated from Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, psychology, and French. In 1975, he earned a master’s degree in public administration from American University in DC. His first job was as a commercial pilot and flight instructor at Airways Service in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa. In 1970, he attended Officer’s Candidate School and was appointed ensign in the U.S. Navy. He eventually was promoted to the rank of commander. He retired from the Navy in 1990.

Christianson’s remains were cremated and will be buried at sea by the Navy.

Christianson’s longtime companion, Angel L. Robles Jr., died in 1990. In addition to Levine, he is survived by his sister, Roma Jeane Rawlins, of Garden City, S.D.; brother, Dennis Lee Barkley, of North Platt, Neb.; and a nephew, Tommy Rawlins of Minneapolis, Minn.
