Remembrances

Carroll Hoggard, a bright light that was with us for too short a time. Carroll joined Independence Squares in the summer/fall of 1989 and attended his first convention, Northstar Promenade, with his partner, Brad Allen, in April 1990. He later joined Philadelphia’s other square dance group, Squares on the Delaware, when the group formed later in 1990. Carroll was a sweet, shy, soft-spoken individual whose tall stature gave the appearance of a rougher individual, not the warm, loving person that he was. His dancing was strong and sure and added to the pleasure of knowing him. The fun that he brought to the dance floor was a treat for those who had the opportunity to dance with him. One story that was shared with me by Will Hamp about Carroll speaks to his caring nature. While Carroll was in the hospital, he gave a bolo to Will to wear at future conventions. Carroll had worn the bolo at convention and it was his way of continuing to participate in the activity and to be with the friends that he loved so much. The bolo was worn by Will for many years until the stone fell out. While the stone may have fallen out of the bolo, Carroll never fell out of our hearts and memories.
