Remembrances

Special to the Tribune

Deerfield native Robert Lee Tadelman appeared with several opera companies, conducted San Antonio's New Alamo Male Chorus, did a number of AIDS benefit concerts, cared for several AIDS victims and addressed high school students before he died of complications from the disease in June 1995 at age 35.<b

But just as the late tenor and choral director's life was devoted to music and helping others, so is his death.

On May 5 Tadelman's former voice teacher at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the internationally renowned vocalist William Warfield, will narrate his Grammy Award-winning "Lincoln Portrait" by Aaron Copland at 4 p.m. at Deerfield High School, Tadelman's alma mater.

Coordinated by another Deerfield alum, baritone Warren Fremling, who coached Tadelman from high school through his professional career, the concert will establish a scholarship for future Deerfield graduates who will major in vocal music performance or education.

Besides Warfield, program participants include Fremling, the Deerfield High School Choraliers, concert band, orchestra and the advanced-placement art students.

"It's a great thing for Tadelman's friends to do," said David Ritter, chairman of the school's fine and applied arts departments.

"There are very few scholarships to give out in the arts. I hope it raises enough money for the scholarship to go on for a long time," Ritter said.

Admission is a minimum donation of $10 a person. Tickets will be available at the door of Deerfield High School, 1959 N. Waukegan Rd., Deerfield. For information, call 847-432-6510.[3]
