Obituary

Benjamin Elwood Cantler of Palm Desert, Calif. passed away on October 21, 2010. He was born to Roy and Maggie Cantler at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md. on December 15, 1932. He died on October 21 of myelodysplasia and leukemia after two years of struggling with the illness. He was raised in rural Whiteford, Md., where he enjoyed riding horses. He attended Slateridge High School in Wilmington, Del. He left the service after two years as a sergeant. While in the service, friends encouraged him to go to college. Using the G.I. bill, he finished his degree in the College of Business and Public Administration at the University of Maryland. Later he attended UCLA where he earned a Master of Science in Public Health. He worked in hospital administration in both the private sector and with the VA hospitals. He retired in 1992 after some years at the VA Hospital in West Los Angeles. A few years after retiring, he moved to Palm Desert. In retirement he took acting class and enjoyed square dancing. His main hobby was playing the piano and taking piano lessons learning classical pieces. He enjoyed traveling. Memorable trips included Egypt and Tahiti. Benjamin is survived by his partner, Roman Claussen of Palm Desert; and a sister, Cleo Holmes of Whiteford, Md. Forest Lawn Memorial-Parks & Mortuaries. [1]
