Obituary

Barry (Bari) Carter Newalu
Sept. 9,1946-Nov 16, 1992
Bari C. Newalu passed away due to AIDS on Monday, November 16, 1992. After persistent illnesses following the July death of his lover, Shall Shaw, Bari orchestrated his last day with his friends Paul Keefe and Sylvia and Ira Sharenow.

Bari was employed by Star Shipping since 1986. He was a 1964 graduate of Castle High School in Kanehohe, Oahu, Hawaii. A Vietnam veteran, he was a member of the U.S. Army from 1967-1970. It was in 1970 that Bari arrived in San Francisco for his full, successful and joyful life.

Nari, being blessed with an alter ego, became a fabulous female persona named Maria Elena. It was through this unique metamorphosis that he would please himself and those closest to him.

Bari is survived by his mother, Eloise K. Williams; his father Edward K. Newalu; eight brothers, three sisters, his nephew Kapono, as well as a multitude of relatives and many saddened friends in San Francisco.

Bari's ashes will be released soon at the Pali on Oahu, Hawaii. Appropriately, Bari will then be with together again with his papa-san, Shell.

Bari would have wished to express his love to his friends at the Watering Hole and Star Shipping.

There will be a gathering of his friends for a memorial service on Saturday, December 5, 1992 at 1 p.m. at Church of the Advent of Christ the King, 261 Fell Street, San Francisco.

Aloha, Bari. Enjoy your new adventures with Shell.[1]
