Obituary

Arcadio Torres-Arroyo, 40, of Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, died Tuesday, April 12, 1994 of AIDS related complications at George Washington University Hospital, according to his sister, Ethel M. Torres of San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Torres-Arroyo had a strong commitment to community work, and his community activities included acting as treasurer of the National Latino/a Gay and Lesbian Organization (LLEGO), from 1989 to 1990. He was a member of the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Area Coalition of Lesbian and Gay Latinos (ENLACE) from 1987 to 1994.

From 1980 to 1991, his career in public service led him to work as a program analyst, translator, and liaison to the D.C Commission on Latino Community Development. Torres-Arroyo also worked for the Mayor’s Office on Latino Affairs, and was the National Coordinator for Leadership Development at Aspera Associates, Inc.

His sister said that his kindness, good humor, and respect of others made him a special son, brother, and friend.

Torres-Arroyo was born April 16, 1953 in Puerto Rico. In addition to his sister, he is survived by his mother, Coco Torres also of San Juan.

A memorial service was held April 16 in Washington. His remains will be cremated and buried in San Juan, next to the remains of his father.
